Transferring a MediaRecorder License to a New Computer
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
A user needs to move MediaRecorder from one computer to another, either because the old computer has failed or is being replaced.
Details
The transfer procedure differs depending on whether the license uses a USB hardware dongle or a software activation key. Applies to MediaRecorder 6.x.
Solution
**If using a USB hardware dongle:**
1. Install MediaRecorder on the new computer.
2. Install the hardware key driver on the new computer before connecting the dongle.
3. Plug the dongle into the new computer.
4. Launch MediaRecorder; the license is read directly from the dongle.
**If using a software (online) activation key:**
1. On the old (working) computer, open MediaRecorder and go to Help > Deactivate License.
2. Choose 'Deactivate Online' if the computer has internet access, then click OK. MediaRecorder will close and the license will be freed.
3. If the old computer is offline or inaccessible, choose 'Deactivate Offline', scan the QR code shown, and follow the link within 24 hours to complete deactivation on the license server. Contact Noldus Support if the old machine is no longer functional.
4. On the new computer, install MediaRecorder.
5. Launch the software and activate using your license key.
