Importing FaceReader ODX data into Observer XT: steps and synchronization considerations
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
Users are unsure how to import FaceReader analysis results into Observer XT, and want to know how to ensure frame-level alignment between FaceReader and Observer XT during manual coding.
Details
Affects Observer XT 17 with FaceReader 9.0 (and likely adjacent versions). FaceReader data must be exported as an ODX file before it can be imported into Observer XT. Large ODX files may import slowly. Synchronization between FaceReader frame data and Observer XT manual codes depends on how the import and analysis are configured.
Solution
1. In FaceReader, export your analysis results as an ODX file using FaceReader's export function.
2. In Observer XT, go to File > Import Data, select the ODX file type, and browse to your exported FaceReader ODX file.
3. Load the file. The FaceReader data will appear as external data alongside your behavioral event log in the observation.
4. If the ODX file is very large and imports slowly, consider exporting and importing single analyses from FaceReader rather than the full dataset at once.
5. To ensure frame alignment between FaceReader and Observer XT during manual coding with a Coder license: note that a Coder (OC) license does not allow modification of the coding scheme or project creation. You need a full (main) license to set up the project and configure synchronization. Switch to the full license when configuring the project, then coders can use the Coder license for scoring.
6. For detailed import logs, use the External Data import pathway in Observer XT if the standard ODX import does not capture all data.
