Warning sign on an observation's event file in Observer XT: diagnosing and resolving event log errors
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
An observation in Observer XT displays a warning or error icon (red warning sign) on its event file or in the event log, indicating a problem with the scored data.
Details
Affects Observer XT 17 and likely other versions. The warning sign indicates an error in the event log, commonly caused by missing start or stop codes for state events, unscored compulsory modifiers, or other coding scheme violations within the observation.
Solution
1. In the event log view, hover your mouse over the red-highlighted event row to see a tooltip describing the specific error (e.g., missing stop code, unscored compulsory modifier).
2. Review the identified event(s) and correct them: add the missing start/stop code, or score the required modifier.
3. If a state event is missing its stop code, navigate to the event in the event log and manually add the stop event at the correct timestamp.
4. If a compulsory modifier was not scored, locate the event and add the modifier value.
5. Save the observation after making corrections and verify the warning sign is removed.
6. If the warning cannot be resolved through editing (e.g., the event log is corrupted), refer to the Event Log File Read Failure troubleshooting steps for deeper recovery options.
