Observer XT coding template disappeared or cannot be found after restarting

Last updated: Nov 01, 2026

Problem

A user reopens Observer XT and finds that a template they were working on has disappeared, or the template file cannot be located in the expected folder.

Details

Affects Observer XT (version not specified, likely multiple versions). Template files are saved by default to a specific system folder. If a template was saved to a non-default location, moved, or the project it was associated with was relocated, the template may appear missing. Observer XT does not automatically back up template files.

Solution

1. Template files are saved by default to: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Noldus\The Observer XT\Templates
2. Navigate to this folder in Windows Explorer and check whether the template file is present.
3. If the template was saved to a different location (non-default), search your computer for files with the Observer XT template file extension.
4. If the template file cannot be found anywhere on the computer and no backup exists, the template cannot be recovered.
5. If the original project that used the template is still accessible and intact, you can recreate the template from that project's coding scheme.
6. Otherwise, create a new template file from scratch in Observer XT.
7. To prevent future loss, save templates only to the default Templates folder and include the Templates folder in any backup routine.
