What can I use
The Observer XT for?
A important part of studying human behavior is performing observations. The behaviors of an individual or group of individuals can be recorded and coded. Coding these behaviors makes analyzing them much easier.
Across various fields including social interactions, developmental processes, user experience, and group dynamics, coding behavior accurately is of the utmost importance.
Tell me moreThe Observer XT applications
By measuring behavior, you can discover and understand a lot about human life. The use of video and coding those sessions greatly expands the scope of such a research project. That's why many researchers use The Observer XT® to capture and analyze behavior such as responses to a task, exposure to a novel object, or play with a sibling or peer.
Neuroscience research
Through the recording of physiological responses to specific stimuli and situations, researchers can reconstruct and analyze the cognitive processes and information utilization within our brain. The Observer XT allows for easy integration of multi-modal data, such as fMRI data, EEG or EMG, along with manually coded behaviors of interest.
User experience research
The Observer XT allows you to launch a video recording and eye tracker at precisely the same moment. That's what you want as a UX researcher, isn't it? It also permits you to synchronize other data streams by sending out triggers to the EEG recording, for example.
Human factors
Human factors and ergonomics applies psychological and physiological principles to improve product design and system efficiency. Research aims to reduce errors, boost productivity, and ensure safety through human-machine interaction analysis.
Consumer behavior research
This type of research benefits from systematic observation and a structural analysis providing key insights in order to successfully predict consumer preference and consumer buying behavior. The Observer XT will help you quantify consumer behavior.
Education and training
When your research is focused on classroom interaction to learn more about group dynamics, teaching behavior, and student engagement, the best research method is observation. It helps you to collect the material you need to improve teacher-student interaction and evaluate interventions.
The Observer XT in research
Researcher Marie Bocquillon uses two labs at the Institute of Educational Management of the University of Mons: an observation lab - where trainee teachers are videotaped while giving a lesson to their peer students - and an interaction lab - where the video feedback sessions takes place.
These feedback sessions are conducted based on the video of the trainee’s teaching practice performance that has been annotated by the supervisor. During debriefing, the supervisor and the trainee watch and discuss how the trainee acted during the lesson. The Observer XT enables Bocquillon to analyse the interaction between supervisor and trainee.
Why should I use The Observer XT?
Discover the benefits of using the GOLD STANDARD for coding and analyzing behavior. It is cited as thé research tool in over 15,000 publications! Besides annotation of behavior from video, all types of data can be imported in The Observer XT.
How do I set up my research?
Good and thorough preparations will provide you with better data and will save you time in the end. Select your hardware, decide on a license structure, get to know the software, design a coding scheme, and visualize and explore your data.
How to expand The Observer XT setup?
You can extend the base version of The Observer XT with two modules: Media Module and External Data Module. In addition you can extend the system with tools such as uASQ to set up questionnaires, uLog to record key- and mouse activity, or E-prime to present stimuli.
