Streamlined vocalization detection made easy
UltraVox
Seamlessly combine ultrasonic vocalization with behavioral data, allowing you to gain additional insights into the affective state of your rodents
How does
UltraVox work?
Record
Either import a previously recorded audio file or use the software to record the calls of your rodents. UltraVox is compatible with any digital microphone (USB or mini jack). Recorded vocalizations are displayed live as waveform and spectrogram.
Label
Go to your recording, draw a box around a sample call, refine your settings and Ultravox will automatically label all other calls within those criteria. Calls can be defined for ranges of amplitude, frequency, duration and time gaps.
Analyze
Instantly get statistics for your whole recording or export your data to a .csv file and analyze it with EthoVision, The Observer or a dedicated statistics program.

Benefits of UltraVox
Why should I use UltraVox?
Rodents don't only show, they tell. However, no one has time to manually label and analyze individual calls. That is why UltraVox is a necessary tool for researchers trying to learn more about the affective states of their animals.
Integrated with other Noldus Software
With UltraVox you can not only analyze calls, but you can also correlate those calls with specific behaviors. By exporting UltraVox data into EthoVision you see how many calls an animal made in a certain zone in a maze or while performing set behaviors.
Fast call analysis
No MATLAB, no GPU, no weeks of troubleshooting. By selecting the call criteria UltraVox automatically labels all corresponding calls in the audio track. This gives you instant results and enables you to focus on your research.
Plug-and-play setup
Consistency is key, also in vocalization tests. Luckily, UltraVox works perfectly together with PhenoTyper, our instrumented home cage environment. Together they create a powerful combination to track behavior and record calls simultaneously.
Not only rodents
Rodents are not the only animals that will try to tell you something through their calls. UltraVox can also be used to analyze other mammals, birds or even insect sounds. If it makes a sound UltraVox can analyze it.

Frequently asked questions
about UltraVox
Full understanding of an animal's response to internal or external stimuli requires measurement of multiple biomarkers, including behavioral and acoustic parameters. The simultaneous tracking of behavior and vocalizations deliver insights that cannot be obtained by measuring either segment alone.
UltraVox can work with as many as 16 microphones connected to a single computer (via a USB hub). However, in practice most researchers use 1 to 4 microphones attached to one PC.
UltraVox works with any analog or digital microphone that is recognized by Windows as a microphone. We recommend the use of a digital microphone. UltraVox 4 has been successfully tested with the Pettersson M500-384 and u38, Dodotronic Ultramic 250K and 384K EVO, and Avisoft CM16/CMPA.
Yes, UltraVox can export time-stamped vocalizations in log files that can be loaded into The Observer or EthoVision, automatically synchronized with your movement tracks or behavioral events. This allows you to do a truly integrated analysis of behavior and vocalizations.
